Film It: The World Inside and Out 2018 Summer Film Camps

Students learned the principles of writing short films and documentaries, from coming up with an idea, researching it, workshopping it to make it better, and then making it as engaging as possible using a series of screenwriting techniques. At the conclusion of camp, students had a short script and a documentary treatment ready to shoot!

Ehren Parks holds MFA degrees in writing from The New School (Fiction) and UCLA (Screenwriting). He’s worked as a writer and producer for the likes of ESPN, Fox Sports, TruTV, IMAX, Baseball Hall of Fame and The Gates Foundation. Ehren produced My Life in China, the award-winning documentary that premiered on PBS and has taught screenwriting at Midland University, New York Film Academy-Burbank, and Next Generation Learning Academy. He’s won the UCLA Screenwriter’s Showcase and fellowships from The Smithsonian and National Association of Theater Owners.

Students learned the ins and outs of filmmaking—working with the camera, understanding lighting, and working on a live shoot with Ishma's film crew.

Ishma Valenti is an award winning filmmaker who focuses on making films with content pertaining to social justice issues and relationships between peoples of different demographics. He was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska and is fascinated with stories of his native state. Aside from directing independent films Ishma is a nonprofit coordinator and works to make an impact in his community and has even co-drafted a bill for the Nebraska State Legislature. “I’ve always wanted to have a positive impact on the world, to inspire people to do great things… everyone watches television and movies on the big screen. That’s where I can make the most impact I believe.”

Students who attended this camp filmed the script written during the first summer camp. Participants got hands-on experience working behind the camera, as well as acting, directing, and editing.
